Be sure to have all of your questions answered before you leave your doctor’s office. The
questions and suggestions below will help you get the health information you need.
General Health Questions:
- How often do I need a physical exam?
- Do I need a flu shot or any other immunizations? When should I get these shots?
- What changes should I make in my lifestyle to improve and maintain my health?
- What kind of exercise is appropriate for me?
- Is there any reading material, videotapes, DVDs or podcasts on how I can improve my
health lifestyle?
- Are there support groups or community services that can help me manage my health
challenges?
If you are a woman, ask:
- How often do I need a breast exam?
- How often do I need a pelvic exam?
- How often do I need a Pap test?
- How often do I need colon cancer screening?
If you are a man, ask:
- How often do I need a prostate exam?
- How often do I need colon cancer screening?
If your doctor orders tests, before you have the tests, be sure to ask:
- What will we know after the test is done?
- How do I find out the results?
- How long will it take to get the results?
- What does the test involve?
- What do I do to get ready for the test?
- Are there any dangers or side effects from the test?
If you are diagnosed with a condition, ask your doctor:
- Could my symptoms be caused by or related to something other than this condition?
- What can I do to learn more about my condition?
- What may have caused my condition?
- Is my condition permanent?
- Are there any lifestyle changes I can make to help me feel better?
- What are all of the options for treatment?
- How can I find out more information about treatment options?
When you are given medication and other treatments, before you start the medication or
treatment, ask your doctor:
- What condition does this medication treat?
- How soon should the medication/treatment start?
- When should I expect the medication/treatment to start working? How can I tell if it’s
working?
- How long will the treatments last or how long will I be taking the medication?
- Will I need to get a refill of the medication?
- How often should I get a refill? (If you are taking medication for high blood pressure,
diabetes, high cholesterol or another chronic condition, you may be using medication
for a long time.)
- What are the side effects or risks of this medication/treatment?
- What should I do if I have a side effect?
- When should I tell the doctor about a problem or a side effect?
- Are there other treatments available?
- How do I take the medication and how often do I take it?
- If I need to take it three times a day, does that mean to take it at breakfast, lunch, and
dinner, or to take it every 8 hours?
- What happens if I miss a treatment or a dose of medication?
- What should I do if I miss a dose?
- Do I need to take it all, or should I stop when I feel better?
- Does this new prescription mean I should stop taking any other medications I’m taking
now?
- Are there foods, drinks (including alcoholic beverages), other medications, or activities
to avoid while I’m taking this medication/treatment?
- Are there herbal preparations or supplements that I should avoid while I am taking this
medication?
- Are there any tests or X-rays that I need to take while I’m on this medication/treatment?
- What printed information can you give me about this medication?
- What are the brand names and generic names of this medication?
- Can I take a generic version of this medication?
- How much will the medication/treatment cost?
- Is the medication/treatment covered by my health insurance?
- Is there a generic brand of the medication available at a lower price? (You can also ask
your pharmacist about this).
